A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ORGANISATION

The Western Province Hockey Union was formed in 1992, following the unification of all field hockey groups. The previously independent associations were: the WP Men's Hockey Union (est. 1962), the WP Hockey Association (Men - est. 1902), the WP Ladies' Hockey Union (est. 1907), the S.A. Men's Hockey Congress (est. 1992) and the S.A. Women's Hockey Congress (est. 1992).

The unions or associations all disbanded; a new constitution was drawn up and for the first time in the history of the sport in this province, all players participated under the same hockey umbrella.

There are 28 senior member clubs of the WPHU, which generate 96 men's and 70 women's teams - a total of 166.

Youth sport, which incorporates all schools, is run by a separate organisation - WPSHOC - but it works very closely with the WHPU.

Hartleyvale is the headquarters of the Union. This was the site of the first astro field to be laid in Cape Town, but for the staging of the women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament in November 1995, the Cape Town City Council built this attractive stadium and put down a new water-based field.
