Umpiring – Your Decision?

SELFPASS6

View the above clip – Yellow is clearly fouled inside the 22 and takes a quick self pass whilst Black remains inside the 5m area of the free hit.

Free hit to Yellow?

Free hit to Black?

Play On?

PC to Yellow?

Leave your answer and a brief reason in the comments below.  The correct decision will be published soon.

I am glad this one has come up – because I am very foggy in this area
Firstly: I am of the very strong opinion (so as to be fair to the umpire and the “defending” team) that a clear effort should be made to “stop the ball” before a “self pass” can be taken – but I see this happening less and less – so I guess my opinion doesn’t count :-)
Secondly: Yellow was happy to run at an angle away from black and as black did not impede in any way, I guess that is fine, but where do we draw the line? What if Yellow chose the most direct route (straight into black) and 1) ran into black or 2) black reaches the 5m mark but as a result of black not “getting out of the way” yellow was not able to progress fast enough.
A silly comparison: in netball the offending player must go stand next to the person winning the penalty and may not interfer in the initial move. this gives the attacking team the rightful advantage it deserves.
I guess my call (as things stand at the moment) in PLAY ON – but I would love to hear your advice and opinions

This will always come down to the umpires interpretation of what has happened.
In this case I think the umpire has done it perfectly, yellow has gone around black just as black has made a clear effort to get out the way. The only thing that could change is that the ball was not clearly “dead” before the free hit was taken. But as it has no real advantage to the yellow player, or disadvantage to the black player then there is no reason to stop play or to award a penalty corner.

There are just way too many variations that could happen, if the defender makes no attempt to get away from the fowl and interferes with play, then one may upgrade the free hit to a penalty corner. But if the attacker runs a direct line into the defender, weather the defender is trying to get out the way or standing still, then I would think that the free hit should be awarded to the defender.

At the end of the day, make the decision you feel is right and stick to it!
    Cheers

TG & Dylan – good analysis!   The Black player is clearly making every attempt to get out and makes no attempt to interfere/play the ball and the Yellow player takes a line where he is totally unimpeded.   Even if yellow had ran at Black, in view of the fact that Black is trying to move away another free hit would be in order NOT a PC.
As far as stopping the ball is concerned, good points made but we need to bear in mind that the object of the self pass rule is to enhance the flow of the game so a little latitude is good.   I would like to think that the Ump may have had a quiet informal word with Yellow and only penalise if repeated, and certainly just running on with the ball cannot be allowed – players need to show that they are making an attempt to stop the ball.
    New clip soon!

    Thanks Dennis
That helps a little – I guess a quiet word to both teams before the game letting them know how you intend to blow the game RE: Self pass, would also make everything a little more clearer.

I have to agree with Dennis here. You are there to see a game of hockey and not to be over-pedantic and technical. You are there to encourage playing and to let the game flow. Being pedantic can only lead to a stop-start situation, which in turn leads to player frustration, which leads to far worse situations for you to manage. Only interfere when necessary. That is the secret of good umpring – learning when to blow and when to let play go

Play on! There are many situations that could have developed after this one, but don’t go out and look for them – don’t scratch where it is not itchy! Be alert for them and realise they could happen, but manage the situation as it happens and develops – don’t assume.

Fully agree with the play on verdict.  In the new rules and umpiring brief they only talk about the attacker who is less than 5m but not affecting play. Perhaps the FIH can add this scenario in future editions!

  7. Brian Smith says:

I fully agree with the “play on” ruling.  In the 2011 rules and umpires briefing, there is talk about an umpire using descretion when a team mate is within 5m in the 23m but not affecting play, perhaps the FIH rules guys could add this as a comment.  It’s almost like the decisions of golf, where they report on the application of the actual rules in real siutations!

  8. DG says:

Nothing wrong-play on. The self-pass was given, player yellow made play, black made an effort not to interfer- yellow took chance and made a bad pass and lost it- or advantage played for yellow who made a bad pass and lost an opourtunity-(tough)-play on

  9. Shane Clarke says:

    PICTURE THIS:
Short Corner is awarded, A player then breaks early, causing him to be sent to the halfway line.
During the next Short Corner a defending player place his foot in the way of a deflection towards the target. The Short corner is not over, and another corner awarded.
Does the player from the half way get to come back ?
My argument… NO.. As the infringement could have been deliberate to allow the player to come back from the half way line, although it has happened, umpires blowing it the other way.
    Any Thoughts…
    Shane

  10. Brian Smith says:

If the foot was deemed to be deliberate then a Penalty Stroke should have been awarded!  I presume that at the new corner, the defending team would then be entitled to a full quota of defenders – Dennis?

That’s way the bestest ansewr so far!
